Hi guys!! I’m back! Spring is here & summer is right around the corner! It’s been a dreary, rainy spring for us but I’m not letting that stop me from getting the outside ready for the beautiful weather to come! This year we changed up our deck decorating! I really wanted to have a comfy cozy spot that was actually a continuation of our home from the inside to the outside & I think I nailed it! We live on a corner, so I don’t really need to mention the lack of a backyard space we do not have. So having a good living space where we could be outside & enjoy was essential. Now…… we love our neighbors, but our homes are all pretty close together, so the curtains add a little privacy without being rude or act as if we are trying to keep anyone out! Since we have tons of ideas for this square footage space, for down the road or maybe just in our dreams I didn’t want to spend a fortune on furniture. I decided to check out #amazonprime since they sell practically everything & YES outdoor furniture is on the list of “everything” & with an incredible price tag that would make anyone smile compared to the big stores! Small catch, you put the furniture together yourself….there is an option to pay extra, but really not necessary, if you give yourself a couple of hours, with a glass or two of wine & some music! It’s actually a very painless project…..the wine actually might have something to do with that but we will just go with….. it’s an easy project to put together!!!
So with some finishing touches of outside items & items that are meant for the indoors (I just bring those in if it should rain)….here it is! Our outdoor space that I love just as much as our indoor space!
Spring is finally here, so that means time to get those flower boxes ready! I have 5 flower boxes on our home & every season I start off strong….buying loads of flowers like I actually know what I’m doing (can you hear the sarcasm) & then half way through the season I lose momentum. My thinking becomes…..it rained yesterday so I don’t need to water today or they say it’s going to rain tomorrow so the flowers can wait till then & then one day turns into 2 then 3 4 5 & now I’ve got myself flowers boxes with dead flowers….not too attractive by any means. One year I actually went to #michaelscraftstore & bought a load of artificial flowers. Although the flowers themselves were pretty, fake flowers in flower boxes outside didn’t really give me the look I wanted. So this year I decided, if I’m going to do this again I really have to do my research & get it right. I jumped onto #pinterest to get some inspiration & I immediately came across this blog & wow did Kelly have all the answers that I needed!! You MUST check her out at http://www.thelilypadcottage.com She is now my official flower box hero!
What attracted me to her blog were the gorgeous photos of her flower boxes……this was the exact look I wanted…..full, bright & the WOW factor ALL THE WAY! Her blog gave me all the answers, so for someone like myself who likes to think she knows all about gardening but actually really knows nothing….this is what I really needed! So I followed Kelly’s instructions & I picked out flowers that were perfect for full sun. We have a white cape cod home with black shutters & flower boxes, so I knew I wanted bright pink flowers & when I spotted the petunias at #meteroplitianplanetexchange, I knew they were going to be a perfect fit! In the past I would always follow the directions that come on those little sticks in the container….you know……plant 10 – 12″ a part & then always wondered why my flower boxes (before they actually died) never really got full like other beautiful flower boxes I would spot as I drove around town. Kelly’s tip….don’t follow the instructions & just pack them in!!!! Yea! I love not following directions & this time it will actually work in my favor!! Now I’m thinking her next 2 tips is what makes all the difference in the world from having flowers boxes to having FLOWER BOXES that will make drivers slam on their brakes as they drive past your home! 1st TIP & this one is probably my favorite ❤️❤️ …….miracle-gro storing crystals. So awesome!!! Just mix a little into the dirt & as you water, the little crystals fill up with water & then as needed they release the water into the soil. Now of course this doesn’t mean I don’t need to water for a week at a time but if I miss a day it won’t be the end to my flowers!! One thing I did learn, because remember….I don’t like to read directions & it may actually say this in the directions but when filling up your boxes with dirt don’t go all the way to the top because when those crystals fill with water they rise the dirt up & you’ll have over flow like I did in a few boxes & pots but it’s not the end of the world & I definitely know for next time!
2nd TIP…….#miracle-gro bloom booster! Those flowers need food like we do….who would have thought! According to Kelly, this made all the difference with her boxes & I am anxiously waiting to take my before & after pictures to share with all of you to see how much of a difference there is after feeding these babies!
So now we wait! I will be back in a couple of weeks with some “after” photos! I am so excited & hope to have some beautiful flower boxes to share……till then, let me leave you with what I’ve just planted!
It’s time to start channeling all my energies into warmer, Springlike weather! March is just around the corner & I’m hoping the real cold weather is staying behind but since I have zero control over that, I can only do the next best thing & that’s to make it warm & cozy inside our home, the place I love to be the most! I love adding a touch of Spring & Easter here & there throughout our home. My favorite spot to decorate is definitely our fireplace mantel in our kitchen, adding a natural feel but keeping it fun is the way I like to go. I LOVE picking up a few new pieces each year to add to my collection & this year I had fun taking a few pieces that I had to alter & using the leftovers in a different way. You’ll notice the bunny hanging on the lavender tree, that belonged to the garland that I have strung across the blackboard. Since it was too long, I took a few bunnies off & used them in different places! I MUST give a huge shout out to @homegoods for never letting me down & always having the cutest decor in stock! Well, here are some of my favorite spots around our home & here’s to warmer weather & lots of sunshine very very soon!
It’s time…..time for another project that is! Received some #HomeGoods gift cards for Christmas & that’s enough to get me started! Bought some great inspiration pieces to update our master bedroom which ofcourse led to “let’s change the paint color….let’s move the furniture around…..let’s add some shiplap behind the bed…..let’s hang the tv on the wall”. It’s a short list, all cosmetic & the best part….I can do it all myself except maybe hanging the TV & I’ll need a little guidance with the shiplap but other then that this is pretty much a solo job!!! I always say that till the hubby starts watching & then can’t help himself & gets involved too…..which secretly, I always hope!
Well stay tuned! I’ll be posting pictures of this journey & of course the before & after photos!
I can’t believe 2015 Christmas has come to an end & it’s now time to put all the decorations away. Not nearly as fun, considering decorating for me is not a one day affair. I like adding & moving around decorations all month long….actually this year I started decorating in November, so the process has been a very long & fun one indeed!
This year thanks to #Target I changed my decorating look for the holidays & went with a more natural feel. It all started one morning when I walked into Target, then what before my wondering eyes should appear but the cutest twine rope & ruffle burlap trees. So natural, so stinking cute & so inexpensive!! So I grabbed what I thought was enough but quickly realized after getting home……I couldn’t have too many. Each trip back to Target meant additional finds……miniature wooden skis, burlap bags, small pine trees with burlap bases…..mini cake plates, burlap banners, muslin fabric tags & the list goes on. It was a dream come true & all these finds were in their dollars section!
Between #Target #HomeGoods & the inspiration I would find on my #Instagram, decorating our house was an everyday project that never got old! The best advice I can give is have fun, don’t make it a chore…..doing a little each day kept me from getting overwhelmed & helps keep the enjoyment alive. Plus I would love my hubbys reaction every night when he came home from work & spied something new!
Now the time has come to pack it all away till next Christmas but before I do let me share with you our home this 2015 Christmas!
Can’t believe 2015 is just about over….its been a year filled with decorating, home projects both big & small, flea markets & social media. Just trying to build a following so I can share what I love to do most! My Instagram took off, (DLRDESIGNSFORYOU) that was exciting!! Received a few likes from #joannagaines which was….HUGE & the biggest surprise by far was getting picked up by http://www.remodelaholic.com for the bed nook my hubby & I created for our youngest daughter. When I received their 1st email asking me to share a tutorial with them, so they could feature me on their blog I thought it was a joke LOL…..this kind of thing doesn’t happen to me! Very quickly though, I learned they were more then serious & wanted to share our DIY project for all those interested to see. What a honor, what an experience & the love I received from their followers was AMAZING! If your not following them, please stop what your doing & find them! They are on Facebook, Instagram & ofcourse they have their own website (www.remodelaholic.com) You’ll find tons of DIY projects you can do yourself with fantastic building plans to help you from beginning to end.
Now in case you’ve missed it, here’s the link to our Bed Nook! This has now become our baby & probably one of our most favorite projects!!
I’m so excited to share this story on my blog! It all started when our 14 year old daughter wanted a bed to go with the bohemian/hippie style for her bedroom remodel. Together we came up with a vision that would fit perfectly with the look she was going for . I then explained our vision to my husband, “it needed side walls, curtains in front that she could close if wanted, storage (because let’s face it a 14 year girl can never have too much storage!) over all it needed to be a comfy cozy place for a teenage girl to hang out that also shared practicality.” Well he took our vision, added a few of his own touches & the end result was so much more then any of us had imagined. Of course the 1st thing I did after it was all completed was share it to my dlrdesignsforyou Instagram page for all my followers to see.
Now here comes the real exciting part!!! Remodelaholic is also a part of the IG family & if your not yet following them, get on that right away & show them some love. They saw our bed & asked if they could feature it on their blog http://www.remodelaholic.com Now you can only imagine the excitement I felt after reading that 1st email from them! From that point on it was an incredible journey of sharing photos, building materials & how to’s! The post went live the day after Christmas & to see our end result out there for all to see was probably one of the best Christmas presents one could receive!
You can check our bed out on the link below where you will find detailed instructions, photos & the building materials needed, along with our journey from 1st thought, to final completion.
